What's On: Daniel Askill "Modern Worship" exhibition

Daniel Askill is co-founder and director of the very excellent design and film studio Collider based in Sydney Australia. With recognisable work running the gauntlet from things such as Sia's "Breathe Me" vid clip (you know the song - the one they play during every reality tv breakup du jour), short film "Concrete Island" for ACNE, commercial work in between for Dior, Xbox and personal installations, Askill is one busy cat.

If you're in Sydney tonight, check out his new exhibition, the first for Gallery A.S. - a transient exhibition space run by Joseph Allen Shea. Titled "Modern Worship" the mixed media work brings together two modern events, the death of Michael Jackson and the 9/11 attacks, in a way that questions the viewers sentiment on modern ritual. And shows Askill's own perception of it.

I'll admit it. I've been slack. Beavering away in an online hell hole leaving me cross-eyed and not bushy tailed. But somewhere in the mix I managed to celebrate a birthday in the best way possible. This year I was given the best gift ever. Insight. Insight into what makes being me awesome. It involved real friends, great food, laughter. It involved hugs, and real wishes said with sincerity. It involved self awakening that time has flown and I've grown with it. Here are some of the things that made my day/week/month a highlight and a pleasure and I send a million thanks to the universe for smiling down and blessing me a million times over.

Lets hear it for the boys

Apparently the eyes have it. Apparently they tell your whole story in a single gaze. I don't know about that, but I know that if you look at someone long enough you might just realise there is more to them than you figured before. Deep behind the persona, revealed through the layers, peeled away one by one, there may just be someone you've been looking for your whole life.

If you got to see the Martin Schoeller "Close Up" exhibition, lucky you duck. Framed to exclude context, the New York based photographer captures extreme close ups of some of the worlds most famous faces and then captures extreme close ups of some not so well known subjects, rendering each one no less important than the face before. Previously an assistant to Annie Leibovitz, Schollers uninflicted, documentary style photographs celebrate reality by undermining celebrity.

Death by Dion

There are some things that take my breath away. Dion Lee is consistently one of them. And while the cut out jackets in his CUE:DION LEE range are reminiscent of his 2009 collection I love and want regardless.

Cue - an iconic Australian brand - teamed with Lee (a 24 year old Australian designer inspired, if not obsessed with the construction of clothing) to present an influential capsule collection to Australian women at an affordable price point.

The range is as you'd expect and seen previously with the Target/Goot Target/Stella collaborations. Straight forward, simple, monotone with spritz' of color. Again more his 2009 style that the current hand-dyed/butterfly print collection hitting stores, however the collection does deliver in cut, construction and celebration of simplicity. Available March 1 at selected CUE stores, below are my pics of the bunch.

Eurofusion

Slowly creeping, whistling in its own way. Slipping past along the sides. And before you know it Summer is over and it's vanished like it was never here. It's about this time of the year that I fall back in love with Cafe Sopra at Fratelli Fresh, Walsh Bay.

Maybe it's the clean, fresh air. The warm sunlight sprinkles that you glimpse through the chill. The mid-seasons that we seem to miss so often every year in Australia when it suddenly turns from gold to cold. But I love the dining sentiment of a simple meal, a glass of wine and a laze back for a short moment in a long day.

My pick of the oh so natural Fratelli menu are the Smoked trout fishcake with soft boiled egg and capper mayo $18 with a side of Witlof salad (with pear, gorgonzola and toasted walnuts) $18, the San Vittoria sparkling mineral with lemon and a glass of house red or white. Delizioso.

When all of the love heart shaped chocolates and sweet nothings have been packed away for another year, and you need a healthy dose of sweat and party, come play at Jussykin's (now) annual photo exhibit Tic Taco II - a skateboarding photographic exhibition by Justin Barnwell @ Beach Burrito, Bondi Beach.

Sometimes the best type of fate falls in your lap. It just happens. It's like one drop in an ocean, causes a ripple and then you're off on a completely different path from where you started. This year already feels like the calmest sea but underneath the currents are dragging me to exactly where I need and want to be. And along the way things are already falling and landing upright. New friends pop up, and whether it's because the drop landed and the motion was set or because of terribly unromantic technology making it so I'd kind of glad that Mia Oatley and her art came from no where.

Buried deep in the heart of the city, nestled quietly away from the prying eyes and beat of Oxford Street, lies new bar Gotham. Inside, it is un-apologetically modern - not surprising giving the fit out if from the commercial maestros of cool - Squillace Nicholas - they of Hugos Manly, The Shore Club (original not the shit-not mess its become), and Prema Hair on Crown (5/490 Crown St Surry Hills NSW 2010 +41 02 9360 8080).

Gotham's New York flair is blended with the subtle decadence by the way of high back booths, chesterfields and the crimson leather-stud bar in front of the back-lit clock which further pays homage to its namesake, the city that never sleeps. Those afternoons, mainly Thursdays, when it's not quite the weekend, but the week has kinda petered out. And all you want to do is watch the November sunset over the city, slightly stinging your eyes as you yawn and slump further into the stained wood seat, as a cool wind blows, across a pretty little roof top bar.

Pop-up bar The Doghouse is quite the place for that. The outcome of the Drambuie "The Premise" competition, The Doghouse was fitted out by Adele Winteridge of Foolscap to be reminiscent of the 20's and is the brainchild of Melbourne cats Rob Dumaresq and Hugh Gurney. Open Thursday - Sunday for a limited time, visitors can get a taste of the casual cool that speakeasy bars stood for. Environmentally sustainable materials were used for the fit out - the stained plywood tables (that can be folded into the walls) are as per the original secret concealed spaces that the 20s bars were about. Vintage furniture is set out, to flow around a central birdcage, and bottles are used as decor, hoisted by a jute rope and pulley system.

The perfect place to stop pre-post art exhibition or simply to melt the weekaway. Shh don't tell - but its located at The (East) Village - 287A Liverpool St, Darlinghurst. Thursday - Sunday 6pm to 12am.

Draw a line

Sometimes, I wish that the world was designed. That everything was stylized and refined and clean and ordered. Until the world becomes that way and then I get a little full moon on myself and need to break free. I do feel however that I could be guided 1984-style with beautiful sports propaganda. Or whipped into shape by Alan Clarke's proposed posters for the for London 2012 Olympic Games transport. These are beautiful and equal to his tip your hat great LA Marathon t-shirt.

Deservedly so, Clarke's work has featured in Creative Review and Wallpaper* Magazine, as well as online by The Architects Journal, FFFFound, and Etre.

Vide(wow)

I was one of the many who jumped on the interesting use of new and old technology via Arcade Fire's "We Used To Wait" vid clip... more so because I'm totally in love with every beautiful sound that comes from the Canadian family duo.

I do feel, however, that this incredible video clip for Australian wonders Angus and Julia Stone is incredible both sound and eye wise. Directed by Australian filmmaker Kiku Ohe and shot by cinematographer Hugh Miller (also responsible for the presets "this boy’s in love" clip), this vid is a simple story of dreaming and escape - right on brief (to create a cinematic and non-glossy visual representation of the music).
