Surfin' for the money

I know that I have at least 40 more years on the slate of workin'. Whether it be for me or for the man, its an obvious necessity that you gotta rake in the dollars to afford the finer things in life (like $80 make-up primer, and hip flasks of vodka...). How we find ways to stay sane and inspired is as unique and varied as the walk-to-work shoes that women wear in the city, but I do know that in my very first role as Marketing Coordinator @ Sumo Salad, my gorgeous boss Dan Foreman - a talented, smart, gorgeous looking guy - let me in on the Aquabumps secret.

Aquabumps is a daily documentary of Australian beaches (not gonna lie - mainly the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney given its based outta Bondi), shot every morning by Eugene Tan, collated and emailed to over 20, 000 subscribers (as of August 2006... so imagine the nb now!) The way he describes it on the website? "Aquabumps is often explained as ‘escapism’… It’s 10:30am at work and you’re in the middle of cranking out a boardroom report for the end of financial year (dang – excitement), you’re in ya suit twiddling your pen when BOOM! the Aquabumps report hits your inbox providing a 30 second aquatic escape."

If however you're on the Northern Beaches - and given I'm from Manly, I'm biased - check out Salt Motion.

Hero Master Class

Ahhh Friday. How I love thee so. At this time of the day the world feels like my oyster. Like I have a million little chances dancing under my fingertip, waiting for me to pin point an exact one that will set the scene for the two amazing day/nights to follow.

One option always jive-bunnying is the Queensy Party House and the Guitar Hero opportunities that come with it. I'm no Jimmy Page but I'd like to think that I give it a red hot go. Maybe if I had Max Dalton's Master Class illustration that features 50 of histories top guitar players in all states of amazingness, I'd be a little bit better.

Funny though, I don't see Stu Harkness in this work... Guess he'll feature in execution 2: the FUTURES 50 top guitar players.

Showing up the white knobs

Worlds worst fail today. 24 minutes into an 1:06:00 minute James Amato mix... and the sound completely died. Turns out, the cheap headphones that I've been carting around for the last 6mths were shitter than anticipated and made to break. Time to upgrade to something that might set me apart from the white knob set - and with an Oak finish, this MUSE option is a treat. All named and designed with individual styling in mind. I might not eat meat-pies, own a ute, or a dog called Rover but totally into the "Carpenter".

A beautiful friend of mine has been selected as a Top 20 Finalist for the Australia Day "Living Australian" photography comp.

For those that have ever dozed in the morning sun, baked in the midday glory, jumped off with the local boys, wandered at sundown with a romantic prospect, or slipped out of home quietly to get rowdy drunk as a teenager, on the rocks surrounding any Australian beach, you'll know how reflective this is of living in Australia.

Feel free to vote (Pic P) as a people's choice fave on either of the links below.

I wanna see a Gilby etchascetch...

Busy little bee researching for a special project at the moment, and stumbled on a gorgeous idea by an striking New Yorker.

Aiming to draw every single resident of New York, artist Jason Polan's style is simply complexed yet extremely elegant. It encompasses a type of intense and simple beauty - that doesn't rely on colour to reflect the subjects true self, and the artists sentiment.

If you're living in the city, email Polan, with the details of where and when you'll be for a duration of two minutes, what you'll be wearing (a bright yellow jacket is a good example of how to be obvious!), with 24hrs notice, and he'll do his best to make it so that you feature on his blog the same evening. (art@jasonpolan.com)

A beautiful idea for the front of a very personal card for home, or an invite to a special birthday or celebration, that is truly a raw example of you.

Just Visiting.

It seems like in the last 12 months I've realised that you don't need to conform to the confines of a dress code according to a suburb or the people that live in it. Its probably a lesson that I should've learnt years ago off my beautiful friends Lynne and Rodney Watt who have been dressing for themselves since I met them five years ago.

Reflecting who you are in what you wear, and having people snicker because they don't get it, is much easier to handle than repressing your true sense of individuality. And to be honest, I think I'd much prefer to be friends with the tiny percentage who do get it, than have millions of acquaintances that don't.

Feel powerful enough to bring some theatre into an outfit. Who knows who you might impress. Chances are, you'll end up driving your own Groupie Bus/#1 Fan. And, there is nothing wrong with that.

Cubism

Project rooms for some of the worlds most AMAZING artists, White Cubes are seriously hot. My favourite photographer in the world - Andreas Gursky - has shown his work. Large-scale, colour photographs that are well known for being chaotic nor featured element, they are often derived from inauspicious sources confronting the viewer with their own urban world .

If you're in the UK, check out one of the White Cubes (48 Hoxton Square, London N1 6PB +44 (0)20 7930 53 73 / 25-26 Mason's Yard, London SW1Y 6BU +44 (0)20 7930 53 73).

Topless Serenity

I live a content, guiltless life.

I love my friends and being able to spend endless amounts of guiltless time - drinking wine, or listening to the quiet lap of water against the edge of a pool - while sunning with them.
I love wandering in my own little universe.
I love being able to wear what I want and not worry about someone telling me that I shouldn't wear a fedora, or be the first one up to dance at a party.
I love the beach and being able to take a late night swim with anyone I want.
I love being able to get caught in the heat and crazy feeling of a a moment and wake up entangled in someone elses clean white sheets without feeling terrible that I've committed an ultimate sin.

But then, on the odd occurrence, I feel sad. Sad that those clean white sheets, the heat of those first dances and late night swims, the fedora in the sun, the quite lull of the pool is never with someone I love at hotels like this.

Uxua Casa Hotel sits on a remote stretch of Brazil's Bahina coast, in the sleepy town Trancoso. Tucked gently amongst a secret garden, the Casas range of fisherman houses, made from traditional building methods and recycled organic materials hide extensive attention to detail - making it one of the most luxurious places to holiday in the world. King sized beds, Jacuzzis, private plunge pools - this is a dream. And while I want to share it with you - I think I'd like to share it with someone else more.

And if you have any doubt about how beautiful this location is... get in touch with Terry Richardson or his bevy of beauties... that shot the Pirelli 2010 calendar at the resort.

Kiddies Del Mar

Can you remember the first song you were addicted too? The first time that your heart stopped because you loved a lyric or felt something because of a beat? Imagine if, rather that the sickly-pink nursery rhymes that litter kindergartens and stereos of parents of the Under-5 set, these Girdy Girdy tracks were the first thing to tempt little feet to get up and dance...
Produced to stimulate, create an environment of imagination and entertainment, these reworked versions of traditional children's songs have been composed with grown ups in mind.

Check out "I'm a Little Teapot". You'll love it - whatever your age! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2201l_a8wZ4

HIT: Safety Wolf

Dreary day in SydneyTown which, on a Friday (and especially the first back at work after a holiday break), often means that people are itching to carry on an Endless Summer and make the most of the cruisey vibe before we're all back in the swing.

What better place to play than at Safety Wolf (32 Belgrave St Manly NSW 2095 - (02) 8966 9022). Kick started by band of brothers Matty Woo, Nigel Park and Philip Golombik this niche operation goes a long way to tempt local kids with something other than overpriced (or overcrowded) drinking spots. Seriously though, if you don't want to play in the scene, and you want to have a fun drink with friends without venturing too far out, the food is good, the music better and the drinks a peach. See you there from 8! :) http://www.myspace.com/safetywolf

Feather down

Self styling soft-Gothic with warm touches nodding to Red-Indian chic and mixed up with some nouveau 70's French Romance. These beautiful raw and unabashed shots by Terry Gates go a some way to summing up how I feel fashion should look at the moment.

Sixth sense.

I remember the days where a signature scent defined who you are - NOT the celebrity endorsing them. I very clearly recall spending time in stores and boutiques finding a smell that worked well on my skin, and that I thought defined me as a person (eventually Narciso Rodriguez eau de parfum).

Thank GOD for traditionalists, who continue to develop raw scents that are authentic, contemporary and developed for those that really do give a shit about how they consume someone elses senses.

Created by Alessandro Gualtieri, the Nasomatto Project is "dedicated to people who have a strong interested in a distinguished choice". Blending unique fragrances to create strong statements, each blend has a name that defines exactly what the reaction to it should be. Topped off with insanely beautiful bottles that juxtapose the hard vs. soft of wood with glass that I love very very much.

** Duro - aims to enhance all the manifestations of male strength
** Narcotic Venus - the quest for the overwhelming addictive intensity of female sexual power
** Hindu Grass - breathe the believe in universal peace and love. The quest for warm affection of humanity
** Silver Musk - evokes superhero magnetism. The result of a quest for mercurial liquid love sensation
** Absinth - evokes degrees of hysteria. The result of a quest to stimulate irresponsible behaviour
** China White - reveals the treasure of a sentimental journey. The result of a quest to reveal the strength of fragility
** Black Afgano - evokes mysterious intrigue and an intense journey

Don't expect to see the notes included in each scent anywhere. Nasomatto leaves these undisclosed so that every scent experience is unique and interpreted by the wearer.

HIT: The Swiss "Bubble Bath"

Don't know if its way too many XXXX Summer Brights, excited at new prospects and plans up my sleeve, having a real tan or the fact I'm a little bit crazy for disco in general but LOVING on The Swiss and their infectious poppy-synth toy noise.

Hailing from Adelaide, picked up by Modular (they release their EP "Bubble Bath" on Jan 29) these guys have a cute little sound that makes you want to get outta your seat, smile sweetly and then shimmy an insane move.

Check out their Myspace www.myspace.com/theswisspage and hit up Bubble Bath (single) on YouTube for a sneak peak.

Art imitates life

Very talented Australian (Melbourne based) artist Sam Jinks' work caught my eye with its hyper-realistic sculptures that are both beautiful and disturbing.

Working on his own art for the last 5 years, Jinks started as a TVC puppet and prop maker who finds inspiration from sculptural realism in art. His confronting work aims to make the viewer think and take away a sense of question. Of their own morality and their interpersonal being.

Jinks' work will be on display at the Karen Woodbury Gallery (4 Albert Street, Richmond VIC 3121, +61 3 9421 2500) in May 2010.
